[OZAPRS] Yaesu VX8GR performance?

FYI

Most of the VK3 APRS digis run MFJ1270 TNCs and FM-828 radios.

The Pre/Dephasis on these digis is by passed as we found through testing
(about 10 or so years ago) that this worked best for decoding most weak RF
transmissions. (It was also understood that the Kenwood APRS radios of the
day reduced or bypassed Pre/Dephasis for APRS)

I don't know how this would affect the decoding of the VX8GR transmissions
as they weren't around at the time.

Cheers

Thanks Tony,
That explains things a bit, I did some tests with my VX8DR and could not get
the beacons to the Digis in Melbourne, even with an external base antenna.
Could trigger my own software TNC though, with carefully adjusted levels on
the TNC side.
Will try the deviation and see how that goes.
Regards,
Andy

Thats like saying its not APRS standard compliant.

Digis/TNC combos are not giving a reliable decode because of the lack of
Audio (tone level) reaching the TNCs discriminator input.

the VHF deviation/audio level. This worked a treat and improved the decode
no end. The one drawback was that it also bumped up the level on voice. Its
a single adjustment. So the trick is a compromise between the two and to
remember not to yell into the microphone when using 2m voice. If your happy
with that then fine. Personally I find it a bit disappointing but at least
its possible to get something going as a work around with this problem.

all working and tested ok at home with your local network and you drive
interstate and find that your APRS really lacks and does not track very well
if at all. The deviation is that marginal and works ok in some situations
and in others it will refuse to work at all. Just bump up the deviation and
its all sorted.

ive read that some digipeaters do not like its format?? but haven't been
able to find anything specific? see below.

RF out is a bit of a problem, the factory antennas not real flash, but it
works. I use it for hiking and cycling. I have used the D700 in the car as
a local crossband a couple of times to help me when away from the digi.
