Again, personal comments.

It is about reducing the peak demand by either price incentives to not use 
electricity during peak times or to defer use into non peak times.  In this 
way the network does not need to be engineered to support a peak load and can 
therefore be smaller in capacity to service a more steady load.  In this 
respect it is utilising the assets more effectively and hence saves network 
build, which I suppose could be green.

I can not remember the exact figures, but something like 10% of the network is 
used 1 or 2 days a year during summer.

Grumpy old people, hi hi, should have a tarrif that reflects their situation. 
As I said in a previous post Energy Australia will convert you back to a 
fixed tarrif if you ask.  Not sure about VK3 but would be interested to know.

Interestingly the smart meter has backfired in some cases.  When faced with a 
hot day and the price per KWh is known by the customer, they rationalise that 
is will only cost a few dollars and crack the AC up to 11.

To get back on topic I would be interested in some more detail on your PC set 
up WRT power saving and running APRS and other ham radio software.
