[VK_APRS_Admin] Ui-Digi 1.9-3 config file for US NEWn-n anyone interested ???

Gday all,

After reading up a bit on the EU and US paradgims. It now appears to me
that there isnt too much of a difference these days. Perhaps we should
just bite the bullet and go for the full US version and be done with it.
ie. Traceable WIDEn-n ..
Do we need to look at standadizing on the regional uiflood configuration
ie SSn-n , if indeed we all decide to go ahead with this at all. Perhaps
just the state designators of .. SA, VIC, NSW, WA, TAS etc . .. Or do we
need to regionalize this even further ? . Things could start to get a
bit complicated if we do that, and in reallity this function may rarely
get used anyway. Do we leave it up to the individual states to decide on
how to handle SSn-n then ?

I think the dropping of Relay and Wide and WideN-N eventually is ok. The
fact that we have very good channels of communication to all of the APRS
users in Australia, It shouldnt be too much of a task to get everyone
onboard with the new Paradgim. Ie. the National Broadcast, Sending out
beacons informing users of the new parameters from some of the better
sited digipeaters. I would suggest that we would swing over all / most of
the users in a farely short space of time.

So currently from a users perspective we'd be looking at these two configs
?

for mobile users WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2 .. once per 2mins on VHF ..
                           GATE,WIDE2-2 .. Oncer per 5 - 10 minutes on HF

For home stations WIDE3-3 .. Oncer per 30minutes. on VHF
Or do we get Home stations to use the SSn-n config .. ie .. SA3-3 , VIC3-3
etc. .. This wont be traceable , but it would cut down on a fair bit of
interstate qrm Id imagine.

So we could keep mobile paths generic nationally and try to regionalise
home station paths perhaps ?

Uidigipeaters SSn-n ? depending on location etc. ?

How does this sound so far ?

Regards .. Andrew .. VK5EX

Gday,

Here is some information on the VK3 APRS network.

*	Any Mobile station in VK3 is no more than 2 Digipeater hops away
from an IGate.

*	All data from VK3* is fed into the RF network from only the
central IGate so all station can see all other station on the RF network
without the need for big path.

*	No big paths are needed to get into the local IGate.

*	The central IGate's tx levels are controlled so that the RF
network does not become overloaded. All other IGate are RX Only for all
posits etc and Tx/Rx for messages.

*	Allowing stations to use 3 hops provides some redundancy and
compatibility with other states that require 3 hops to reach an IGate.

*	There is some redundancy built into the network for alternate
paths etc in case of digipeater failures.

Below is the UIDIGI config we are using for the digi's that have changed
frequency in VK3.

Eventually all digis will use this config. However we may remove WIDE from
it after the frequency change.

As you can see it will handle WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2 just fine. The UIFlood call
may not be included in the final config.

Preemptive digipeating is used on some sites to allow traffic route
control with INET which is used by the IGate.

Timing is another area where ideas can be different

We operate on the principal that the timing is set to preserve the
digipeated packets as most of the packets originate from the central IGate
and ripple out to the ends of our star network, a bit like ripples in a
pond. Also there not enough packet traffic volumes to justify clobbering
packets with aggressive timing settings. Hence PPersist = 64 & SlotTime =
20 as standard. These settings can also give you flexibility if you want
to direct traffic to a specific digi over others. If for instance you want
to have the main coverage digi (big hill digi) or high traffic digi take
priority for digipeating packets you can change the timing of this digi to
something like PPersist = 64 & SlotTime = 10 or this PPersist = 100 &
SlotTime = 10 for extra high priority. These are effective (and subtle)
ways of directing packets down selected routes without impacting on miner
digis or the users.

Please do not distribute this configuration information to the general
APRS users.

Cheers

Richard

G'day to all on the group...

As there has recently been some traffic regaurding the differences
betwen the US - EU NEWn-n If anyone on the group wants to see how I
have configured the two southern VK7 digis then I'm happy to share
this information and make the conifig availiable for download via this
group.

let me know if this information is required and I'll make it happen!
