Gday Mike and others,

maybe you misinterpreted Richards figures for 30m propagation .. i.e. .. 
skip distance is "Between" roughly 500kms - 1500kms during the day
This probably extends to 1000kms - 2000kms in the late afternoon and early

morning.

We've found 30m to be pretty well the best compromise in Australia for hf 
APRS. given various considerations. i.e. skip distance , band noise
levels, 
band occupation .. etc.
