I don't have much faith in some USB plugs and sockets. In my case I had 
the RPi and dongle in a box mounted up the mast. Bumping the bottom of 
the mast caused enough vibration for the dongle to fail due to momentary 
loss of contact. A reboot of the Pi restored the service, ready for the 
next bump!

Did you think to check dmesg and /var/log/syslog for any clues? Hint: If 
you run dmesg -T you timestamp the results. dmesg -C will clear all entries.
