Agree with Jack...spot on, when the internet got legs, you could download your email in seconds. I think if BBS and packet had moved with the times, and made the BBS 9600bd with different I/P freq (like satellites) to avoid congestion and collisions that would have kept it going longer. Anyway with the new NBN, maybe 1200 bd simplex isn't that bad anyway ?

I do Robust packet, but not with any VK stations, only EU ones, as no local interest bar one other station in vk2. But happy to help you in that direction if you want.

Unfortunately, other modes took over and Packet went the way of the Dodo, I still have a BBS here that has not run for many years.
There seems to be a resurgence using Robust Packet mode in other countries though.

I had given thought to setting up a 3 year old KAM XL at our club repeater site as a simple mailbox for our club members to access. Might have to put it up to our next meeting and see what the interest is.

OK, so who here is the technical supremo that can for me, without guessing :

1) fill me in on a few questions I have of what has happened the past 30
years in packet

- what happened to the 7575 frequency ?
- what happened to ROSE and net/rom ? are there any of those gateways ?
- is there much connected mode traffic these days ?
- what happened to the 4800/9600 backbones?
