That's interesting, how are you generating the messages from home or the car or something ?

Yes RX iGates "can" break two-way messaging, but only in certain circumstances.

We lost a very good Wide2 digi that covered the Adelaide plains here in VK5 a while back and as a result there are now black spots where APRS messaging no longer works.

To make it worse there is a RX only iGate that has a good shot into that area, so it picks up the message fires it back into APRS-IS only to reappear via our internet->rf gateway... the issue is when you reply over RF it goes no where. You've got to check the path to work out if it's worth while. Turning that RX only iGate into a digi to aleviate the issue is not a good idea since there are three WIDE2's within cooeee of that area so the forth will do nothing but create congestion. Catch 22. One day we may find a site to replace the one we lost.

With respect to messaging many of us used to take advantage of the QSY feature of our kenwoods (it tells you where other stations are listening), so when the local repeater was busy I could message others to QSY to an adjacent repeater without breaking in and QSY-ing on the first repeater. With the holes in the messaging network this has proven harder.

Anyway that is the only negative, we have a plethora of RX only iGates around here now days, so it's interesting to see how things change.

I'm not voting either way on rx only igates. Some scribes on a US aprs list claim they break messaging but what's the experience in the land of Oz? I've personally found aprs messaging to be useless; maybe others have used it with success. Just asking out of curiosity.

Hi Bob,

There is nothing wrong with using a WIDE1-1 to fill in a local area, ideally you want your fill-in digi to hit VK2HIM. The whole point of a WIDE1-1, is to pick up local stations and throw them up to the WIDE2's for distribution. Once upon a time they were called RELAY's, until the new WIDEx-n paradigm came into effect.

Your RX only iGate wont cause problems, APRS-IS removes dupes server side *before* distribution.

I'd +1 APRX as Scott has suggested, you might like to search Owen VK1OD's website for information on what he worked on previously. There are some fixes to APRX's digi system that are well worth the effort (https://github.com/owenduffy<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2Fowenduffy&data=02%7C01%7Cvk3tbn%40hotmail.com%7C9173ea305b034e95b27a08d525a2b453%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636456303099284737&sdata=nU4SfB9zV7yTCY5Knjg3Xeta7tkccwNVt1T78qLpHOY%3D&reserved=0>). I've been running a rPi RX Only iGate here in VK5 for the past 5 or so years, they work well.

YMMV.

Hi

I'm Bob, VK2BYF, in Nowra

Having lost our local digi some years ago and our local ham population being very sparse we seem to have dropped off the APRS map.

My Tiny Track in my motor vehicle can't be heard by the nearest Digi, VK2HIM near Gerringong, until I gain some altitude.

To get myself back on the APRS map I decided to build a RX only Igate using a Raspberry Pi, RTL-SDR & direwolf which seems to work ok.

I experimented with a laptop running direwolf, KA2DDO's YAAC and a FT-817 as a fill in digi, Wide 1-1, which also seem to work ok.

The next phase was going to be to setup a RF digi using a cheap Chinese VHF/UHF Radio to fill in the local RF hole we have here in the Bomaderry, Nowra area.

Knowing very little about APRS but the basics and having been monitoring this forum for a while, I have more questions than answers.

A wide 1-1 to fill a local hole is that rite or wrong?

RX only IGate to fill a local RF hole, Is this going to cause problems?

Should I even bother to build a proper RF in and out digi?

What is the best configuration just to fill in a local RF hole and get a fair section of the Princes highway back on the map?

BTW I prefer to run things on Linux. YAAC, a java applications work very nicely on Linux.

Regards Bob vk2byf
