I also found a handy RS232 cable for the PI on Ebay from Britan. It has the 
3.3v to RS232 conveter built in to the DB9 and plugs directly into the GPIO 
header pins on the PI . Its designed to talk to the PI using Putty or 
Hyperterm etc but can easily be used to create a RS232 port for a GPS or TNC 
which does not have the issues associated with USB converters etc. You end 
up probably with  /dev/ttyAMA0 .
