[OZAPRS] VK2US-1 To close.......

Nic...

Arranging for the rooftop here to be cleared is proving to be a low priority
task. So while we have the location we're letting it run.

Hi all,

I still see VK2US-1 digipeating. Did the site not close or has it shifted
somewhere else?

Pete (vk2us) where is that photo of us putting up the antenna ? Remember
the FM92, we drove just over the ANZAC bridge and the thing was as deaf as a
post. We put in the 828 and it could hear us out near Lithgow....!!

Its funny to thing that 4 bolts into a roof, a temporary concrete pad and
the thing sitting ontop of a power box in a passage way could get in the way
:-)..Its all about policy.....

I remember getting Colin in there with his spectrum amp to see how bad the
environment was, rather ugly...

Peter,

Allow me add my name the list of people thanking you for VK2US-1. Thank you.

With regard to the capability of the FM828, I'm sure many of you have seen
me recommend the humble FM828 on many occasions, and with good reason. The
radio might require a pair of decent crystals at a cost of about $70 but you
can get the radio for free, or maybe $20. For less than $100 you have a
radio that is almost bullet proof.

The FM828 rx has a respectably narrow front-end that was never intended to
extract the last 0.1uV from the ether. It will do, typically, 0.3uV for 12dB
SINAD (the spec says 0.35uV for 12dB SINAD), however, and return that
performance under very hostile circumstances. Ask yourself if you want a
0.1uV rx that clams up to maybe many uV (or blocks completely) under harsh
conditions, or a rx that hears 0.3uV 24/7. Standing current of the 828 is
also respectably low, around 250mA when muted. If you take low level audio
and keep the volume control wound right back the standing current doesn't
change when a signal is received. The FM828 tx is continuously rated at full
power (25W) and the unit will work over the range 10-16v. Try that with your
Yaecomwood!

The rx in the Philips FM814 base station is directly from the FM828 mobile.
Yep, Philips engineered a damn good radio with the FM828 and, that was
around 1978.

Peter,

Thank you for hosting the digi for the last 10+ years - it has been
fundamental to the APRS network in Sydney - in fact a large chunk of NSW!
For those that are unaware, the coverage of this digi is/was phenomenal
with direct paths out to Orange, Canberra and along the coast to Newcastle
and beyond Wollongong.

As one of the installers of this digi I'm still blown away by how well a
humble FM828A mobile rig with no external filters handled the intense RF
environment of the CBD, being a stone's throw from GPT and Centerpoint - the
two largest comms sites bristling with pagers.

The original installation was an FM92, however the high noise floor rendered
the digi useless, it couldn't hear anything beyond about 5km from the site -
swapped with the 828 and never looked back.

It will be sad to see this digi close, but, life goes on :-).

Cheers,

Guys..

After more than 10 years the Sydney CBD WIDE VK2US-1 will be shutting down
in the next few days. We've lost the site.

Sorry for the short notice but that's how it is.
