Ben,
To answer your actual question,
Down load a live cd image that includes Xastir. It's a bit try before you
bye, so to speak. If you stuff it up just reboot and start again. You can
burn it to a CD and boot from it or just mount the iso file in a virtual
machine like sun virtualbox under windows or Linux. Then ask plenty of
questions
I started with a ubuntu ISO from
http://www.175moonlight.com/xastir/livecd.php (it's still running, but from
from a compact flash card on the production IGate vk2jma-5 up in the back
shed).
