70's era packet gear requiring the bbRAM battery to be removed? I don't 
think so.

Packet didn't arrive in Australia until about 1982, very close on the 
heels of the Vancouver (Canada) protocol that preceded ax25.

I agree that the MFJ  early 1980's TNC are reliable, having used many of 
them in BBS and now APRS service for over a decade.
