Gary,

What direction are you intending, traditional packet or aprs? If it's 
traditional packet a TNC or sound card modem is possibly your best bet 
but for aprs there are those option plus a few more, depending on 
whether it's home or mobile that you're after.

Toss a few thoughts into the arena and you'll get plenty of help here.
