Yes Fox Delta digi now supports WIDE1-1, WIDE2-1 and works fine as a fill-in
digi. In fact I have ordered one to hook up to my (so far) unused Maxxon
DM2550 which can then be used as a portable fill-in when/where needed.

 

And you are correct, there is no proper digi in this area. In fact when I
came up here from Melbourne five years ago I more or less mothballed all my
APRS gear. Recently Art VK4GO has returned to Oz and taken up residence in
Cairns: he is keen on APRS and has been visiting the local clubs promoting
it. As a result a few people are playing with it and he has his D700 set up
as an iGate with UIView. Hopefully this will lead to a proper digi being
installed in Cairns and another at Kuranda where the Cairns club has a site
and license. If that happens we will have good coverage around Cairns and
the Tablelands.

 

So the current problem is, hopefully, temporary but it appears that when it
was decided to use the new paradigm no one expected that there would be
remote areas using multiple fill-in digis. I guess there is such a
preponderance of full digis in the US that this is understandable and the
problem does not arise in the Australian capitals.

 

Anyway, I recently put up a 17 metre tower and can get in to Cairns. Art has
improved his antenna at his home iGate. Now I can get to him without any
intervening hops so the problem diminishes somewhat...
