Hi All,
If you're looking for a source of maps, 1:250,000 or larger, check out
Geoscience Australia - www.ga.gov.au.
Under Interactive Tools is a link, Map Connect - make your own
topographic maps. Click on that and you will be presented with a page
where you need to tick the box and agree to the terms and conditions.
After that you will see a map of Australia at a scale of 1:25,150,208.
You can click the area that interests you and the map will zoom in.
Zooming-in can be continued to 1:250,000 scale. You need to have cookies
enabled for the site. You can also enter the required scale in a box
near the bottom left corner.
The "grid" lines that start to appear are the boundaries of the relevant
1:250000 topographic map.
I didn't progress to downloading the map I had produced. Instead I used
Hoversnap, a free screen grabber to grab what I wanted as a jpg file.
When navigating the map on screen, the pointer coordinates are shown.
These are useful for setting corner boundaries in the inf or geo file
for UIView or xastir, respectively.
The map I'm currently using covers from just west of Tamworth, in the
west, just north of Coffs Harbour in the north, and just south of Taree
in the south. The map extends about 100km out to sea to facilitate the
display of coastal wind warning information. At the scale required to
cover this area (1:1,500,000), topographic information is colour
related, with a psudo 3D effect that gives way to contour lines at
1:500,000 or closer zoom levels. My map shows major (named) highways and
(named) river systems, as well as town names.
If anyone wants a copy of the map I've produced, plus the inf and geo
files, I'm happy to email the files to you. All up about 540kb.
