[OZAPRS] Finally got the HF mobile working in the 4WD- Off to Alice28th May

I had some problems getting the set to transmit at anywhere near full
power (IC706MkIIG). Nissan Patrols are renowned for bad earthing,
chassis to cab etc. So I've been installing lots of earth including 1
inch wide copper strap here and there. It seemed to improve things no
end. I've had VSWR below 2 according to the transmatch meter, but
suspect erroneous reading due to bad earth. This morning with the
same transmatch and earth installed I was able to tune to less than
1.2:1 and low and behold the transmitter now transmits at full power.
The transmatch will not be up to travel though, so I either need a
small robust whip tuner or a new HF antenna for 40m. I am currently
using a VKS737 whip with the wander lead in the 8022KHz socket and
matching with the transmatch. I wonder would it be easier just to
make some sort of UNUN transformer, since I only intend to use 40m at
this stage?
