First, welcome to Linux, and welcome to Xastir.

Secondly, don't fear the penguin.  I've been using Linux for a while now,
and to be honest you don't have to be a guru to get it going- just use it!

Thirdly, I find xastir a bit "clunky", but I recognise how full-featured
and powerful it is, so it's worth playing with.

And now my point (and I do have one).  I wrote a brief tutorial on using
UI-View maps with Xastir.  I hope you find it useful:
