[OZAPRS] Fw: 10MHz HF Gateway -Re: New to list

I use a Codan 6801 here for 20m packet and a Tracker Lynx for 40m
packet. They're both crystal locked rigs that are built like the
proverbial brick dunny. They are designed to be driven all over the
Australian outback and maintain stability to licencing authority
standards. I obtained both of mine for free, you can't get any cheaper
than that!! The crystal (just one per channel is required), made to
Codan specs, cost $30 from Hy-Q.

Whilst talking about old Codans I thought I'd throw this in, it might
save someone else the same head scratching exercise that I went through.

The following applies to at least the Codan 6801 and 7727 PA's which use
identical PCB's.

My 6801 was not dropping back to receive, well not entirely. The
electronic switching was ok but the tx/rx relay was holding up due to
the presence of about 2.5 volts across its coil.

The problem stemmed from five rivets that connects earth pads on
opposite sides of the PCB all suffering cracked solder joints to the
copper pad. The rivets provide DC ground continuity to much of the PA
board. The location of these rivets is around the PA transistors and
heat changes is the obvious cause of failure. Given that it can happen
on one PA board, it's a likely candidate for others as well.

If you're going to take your old Codan into remote places, it might be
as well to have a peek at those solder joints before you leave.
