[OZAPRS] New to list

Re connecting to a server with UI-View, you may just need to configure
it right. You DON'T need to fiddle with the router as UI-View only
makes out-bound connections, and routers allow these (otherwise your
web-brouser and email wouldn't work).

If you wanted someone else out on the web to connect your UI-View
running on your machine, then you would need to port-forward port 1448
to your PC, but as 99.99% of people don't do this, you can safely
leave your router alone...

A couple of things...

You can connect to almost any server, but you may as well connect to
one that closest to you. Under 'Setup' --> 'APRS Server Setup', look
for australia.aprs2.net:14580 (the list at the top right of the window)
If you can't see it, you can add it simply by pressing the 'Insert'
key, and typing it in, including the port (14580 in this case), and
don't forget to add a tick in the box next to it (and one or two
others too, in case the connection temporarily gets lost).

Also, click on 'APRS server log on required'
Add your Validation number in the box (yours will probably be 5 digits
long and start with 18xxx (replace the x's with the rest of your
number))

Click (enable) 'Enable Auto-reconnect'

In the 'Extra log-on text' box put something like 'filter m/500'
(without the quote marks) which asks the server to send you all data
within a 500km radius of your position (which you defined in the Lat &
Long. in the 'Setup' --> 'Station Setup' window)

See <http://www.aprs-is.net/javAPRSSrvr/javaprsfilter.htm> for what
else you can do with the filter command

and maybe set the 'max silence' to something between 2 and 5 min,
depending on how much data is being received.

Click 'ok' out of that, and click 'Action' --> 'Connect to APRS
Server' & yes to Log-on

That should get you connected and seeing things appear on your map. If
you would like it to 'auto-connect' when UI-View starts up, there's a
simple way of getting that done too, by way of the in-built Schedule
editor ('File' --> 'Schedule Editor') If you get stuck, press the
'F1' key - it changes with whatever window that you are in at that
time .

As for AGW, you can talk to it with UI-View. 'Setup' --> 'Comms Setup'
and Host mode of AGWPE. Choose an IP Address of 'local host' or
127.0.0.1 - either should work if you already have AGW running on that
same machine.

P.S. USB GPS are really only good for plugging into a PC - they won't
work with a TinyTrack (or Opentracker) as they are expecting RS-232
Serial data at 4800 baud...
If you are REALLY keen you can always hack a USB GSP & convert it to
RS232...
