[OZAPRS] APRS automated into your home

And the wife saying, "you turned the lights on half an hour ago, where
the
   heck have you been?"
I can get into enough trouble without automating it :-)

Thanks Geoff,

I was mainly interested in the part that interfaces with APRS, so it
remained on topic. I will investigate when I get a bit of time, say
around 2012?

Yes, your could hoax as Geoff and set his lights off! I was in Melbourne
for a while when I first set up. GPS stream was not going to the Modem.
Back in Sydney now.

Re: [OZAPRS] APRS automated into your home

Hi Shaun,

Home Automation is a very broad area to play in, beyond the scope of this
mailing list, however here is a brief summary of what I do here.

I run an application called Homeseer ([5]http://www.homeseer.com) which
manages
all of my automation. It talks to several IO controllers via Ethernet,
and
these in turn read various inputs and control outputs, including Relays to
turn on and off various lights. It also has quite a good TextToSpeech
engine embedded, which drives several speakers around the house via an
amplifier. (The speakers are also used to play MP3/Streaming audio)
A set of RF motion detectors and keypads also integrate with the system,
and
to finish it off the whole lot is controlled in a friendly manner from a
touchscreen panel in the hall, driven by another application called
MainLobby ([6]http://www.cinemaronline.com/mainlobby.html)

On top of the basic HS package, there are a large number of plugins,
including one called APRSParser, written by KB1MTS. This plugin connects
directly to the APRS-IS, and you set up a 'device' within the automation
package for each callsign you need. (I have once device called VK2XJG-9)
The plugin also has configurable locations, I set up 'home' and 'work' as
the appropriate coordinates for each.

This device can then trigger various events when pre-defined conditions
are
met. In my case, one example is I announce a text string when VK2XJG-9 is
at a position less than 2km from 'home'.

As I mentioned - it's a very complex and large area to start playing with
-
but it can be a lot of fun - and very time consuming :-)

Regards,
Geoff VK2XJG

Hi Geoff,

I am interested in the method you use to get the house to play the
announcement and turn the lights on? Can you expand on how it works?

Shaun Pitcher

LOL :-)

It does have some practical uses - I have automated our house to some
extent and have integrated APRS into the home automation. The house plays
an announcement when I am on the way home and within 2km and also sets up
a few conditions, turns on lights etc all just from receiving a well
placed posit message :-)

Don't turn off the beacon - set it to every 15 or every 30... It can
still be a handy thing to have, but it's not essential.

Forgot to mention the other comment you had with the TO field ... This
sets the icon that is displayed, GPSMV sets it to a car. If you send to
APRS I think it just comes up with a generic dot or X symbol (can't
remember exactly)

Regards,
Geoff

Thanks Geoff,

Kantronics KP3 with 8.2.

Beacon is every 5 at the moment. I might just turn it off.

Fun to watch isn't it. I tracked the misses last night as she drove
around. She smiles as she gets out of the car and I am already standing
there waiting with the door open.

Shaun,

If you are using a standard TNC, then yes, the beacon comment does show

up

as the GPS string. The beacon comment in UI-View (and other apps) only
really works properly for a fixed APRS format beacon (e.g. Digipeater

that

does not move) or for Mic-E compressed posits.

The Status text will show up, provided your BTEXT starts with a >
The BTEXT will only be transmitted at intervals determined by the BEACON
setting, the recommendation is BEACON EVERY 30 which means you will

send

ONE status message every 30 minutes. This is a separate packet to the
posit, and doesn't really convey any useful information, so we recommend
not
sending too often.

Been watching you drive home tonight - looks good :-)

Regards
Geoff VK2XJG

Hi All,

I have been running for a while now with mostly success. I was tracked
successfully to Teralba near Newcastle, to find the field day postponed.
Bummer.

The only issue I have at the moment is the beacon comment in UI-Veiw

comes

up as my $GPRMC sentence as does my frame. I was wondering if this is a
Paradigm issue as I am using Wide1-1, wide2-1.

Also my status does not seem to come up in the status despite having the
beacon start with a '>". Should my beacon address be APRS or GPSMV?

Any other comment, especially if I am causing problems and are unaware

of

it, would be appreciated. Thanks for the learning experience.

Shaun Pitcher
