Hi Ray,
The 5.4MHz offset came up in discussion with with John Martin a
number of years ago. It wasn't so much following from any commeical
split but more a pairing that made sense band plan wise, and also
allwoed for 2 receivers 400kHz apart to be run (just) through the 1
band pass cavity.
He proposed it to allow pairing of 432.625 - 433.000 inputs with
repeater outputs 438.025 to 438.400MHz to allow for a clean LIPD free
input to a repeater.
All the repeater input channels above 434.79Mhz are used in Sydney
basin with standard -5MHz offset repeaters, so there are some
repeaters applying for 438.025-438.400MHz outputs and running the
normal -5MHz receiver with CTCSS (other than 123 Hz as 123Hz is
spooked by wideband FM music content) and a -5.4MHz receiver with no
CTCSS to provide a clean receiver with no LIPD desense.
