Gerard's point is valid, however my approach to the system would include
a simple receiver with cd output to inhibit the tx.

As I understand my short 30 years in amateur radio - building things is
part of the point of the hobby - not just to buy stuff off the shelf???

 

Andrew - thanks for the heads up on the new Yaesu unit, however my
experimenting in APRS is aimed at having small systems I can use on my
horse/motorbike- where weight and size are an issue. I am not a big fan
of all in one units.
