Gday Roger,

On HF APRS you are potentially sharing the one low capacity frequency with
the world. In reality, depending on atmospheric conditions you will be
sharing the frequency with most of Australia and New Zealand (the amateurs
across the Tasman :).

The HF capacity has less than 1/3rd the VHF capacity yet has the potential
cover 10 times the population. Shoving a big VHF ball in a small HF hole
just won't work. We all need to be mindful of this when operating HF APRS
in
everyday situations.

(Remembering that an average length APRS Posit packet takes 3 to 4 seconds
to transmit on HF. And assuming a channel efficiency of 30% for ax25 this
results in a maximum of 7 stations being able to transmit per minute.)

The Targa Tasmania Rally is a managed special event not an everyday
situation and you are running 3 cars (assuming a beacon rate of 1 per
minute). So it's not going to have a big impact on APRS HF for an extended
period. You may also decide to run it on a different frequency or band.

>From a technical view point I'd be interested in how reliable the HF
comms
will be.

Cheers
Richard
