Gday Bob and all,

WICEN / Ham radio based emergency coms in South Australia for the most
part
is centered primarily around major regional centers, with the local radio
club for that center being the hub for this activity. E.g.. Port Lincoln,
Mt
Gambier, The Riverland, The Barossa Valley. Most of these regions do
currently contain there own Igate and digipeater(s)although not
necessarily
controlled by the local radio club. In Adelaide, while there are several
radio clubs that actively get involved with APRS operations, the main
network coordination is done by one or two people. This makes network
coordination through the whole of the state relatively easy. I believe
this
is a similar situation with most of other states. WICEN in South Australia

has in fact utilized APRS extensively over the past few years for both
vehicle tracking and message handling to great effect during community
support events, Car Rally's and the like. Traffic levels are such that we
can and have utilized the existing APRS infilstructure to run these
excersizes. In our case APRS has proven to be an extremely valuable asset
during these events, and therefore the APRS network and re-configuration
should be done, keeping WICEN type activities as a primary focus.

Regards . Andrew .. VK5EX
