Yes,  HF Messaging works..  It has some interesting results and you need
some patience sometimes. As Bob memtioned if you have some smarts involved
in the messaging clients then it helps alot too..
If you want to try fiddle a bit with it then try sending some messages to
VK5AH-4 Digi_ned
It will give you some replys.
Try for example
MH 2    will give you a heard list for the HF port.
Info      is another one
DX 2     will give you a DX listing for the HF port
H1     is one of the help lists
Stats   is interesting
There are a stack of commands there frankly but thats a few to fiddle
with.
If messaging times out and you suspect you didnt catch a message then
sending
APRSM  will force all your un-Acked messages to be resent to you.
