[OZAPRS] APRS HF beacon rates

Gday Richard and others,

I have noticed this a bit lately too. I think though that the main problem

might be with a bit of misunderstanding with regards to the Smart
Beaconing
options in the later trackers. i.e., TinyTtrak3 , opentrak, etc. It can be
a
be convoluted to say the least. Its no good just leaving the options for
this set to default, Especially on HF. I personally don't like smart
beaconing at all as I think that on a busy network the benefits are
overshadowed by the excess of posit beacons created. We've found that a
constant mobile rate of 2-3 minutes for VHF and 5-10 minutes for HF works
ok
generally. Then a stationary rate of 20-30 minutes for both VHF and HF
seems
to not cause any problems. These sort of posit timings can be configured
in
a fashion within the smart beaconing operation. I think perhaps we need to

look at creating a standard set of options for those people running Smart
beaconing trackers for both HF and VHF and perhaps post them on the
various
aprs help pages on the net.

Regards . Andrew .. VK5EX

Gday,

I've noticed a lot of station running HF with excessive beacon/posit
rates.

You are sharing this single frequency with hundreds of other operators
around the world, with skip conditions you never know where your signal
will
go.

Remember to consider all other users of the HF network .

Using a beacon rate of ½ to 1 minutes is ok for tuning and testing for a
short time, however it is NOT ok the leave your tracker beaconing at this
rate continuously.

When you have finished tuning Remember to so set your beacon rate to 10
minutes as per the VK HF Guide
