apt-get install ax25-apps ........

and away you go.

Latest stable version of Debian is sarge which can be purchased on CD,
or DVD or both from EverythingLinux.com.au

As it is now 14 CDs, you might consider getting DVDs and installing a
DVD reader (~$40) and telling it that the CDrom (includes DVD drives) is
your installation source, but also select a http update source. This
will be helpful for people with dial-up or low download links.

apt-get update <- updates to latest package package listing
apt-get upgrade <- downloads and upgrades the "improved" packages (inc
secuity fixes.

If you are happy with command lines, then xdm, xfree86 and twm give a
basic, light gui interface for using a basic Pentium machine.

I looked a Ubuntu, but it is made for idiots. I couldn't see any reason
for the fart arsing around with root. Set up with root, then log in as
your user and do your work/hamming.
