Geoff,

Your idea is good as it will get rid of the confusion.

Yep the uneducated recon its not a URL unless it's got WWW at the
beginning.
I've had this argument a few times.

Gents,
I was in contact with the people who are running the ???.aprs2.net system.

They where wondering if we wanted to join? Any thoughts? See Below;

Cheers
Richard.

--------------------------------------------------------

I have been aware of your two servers down there since before Tier 2. I
have always wanted to incorporate your servers into the network, but had
been hesitant to ask until we became well-established. Looking at your
port
list, there are only two ports that concern me - 10154 and 10155. On
every
Tier 2 server around the world, 10154 provides a US feed and 10155
provides
a Europe feed. Port standardization was one of the top priorities of the
establishment of the Tier 2 network, but I had realized that your server
had
been up for quite a long time, and wasn't sure you wanted to make changes
like that. Between your two servers, there are currently at this moment
about 35 clients connected that would be affected if you made the changes.
Would you be willing to make those changes and contact each client to
inform
them of the move? If so, then there is absolutely no problem!

According to your port list on the servers, here's what it would look like
in Tier 2 standards:

1314 - Messaging Only Port
2323 - WX Feed (currently your 10160)
10151 - Full Feed w/ history dump
10152 - Full Feed no echo
10153 - VK/ZL Feed w/ history dump (if desired)
10154 - USA Feed
10155 - Europe Feed
10158 - IRLP Status
10160 - ARISS/PCSat Feed (currently your 10155)
14578 - ZL Only APRS Feed (currently your 10154)
14579 - VK/ZL APRS Feed (currently your 10153)
14580 - User-Defined Filter Feed

Please study this list and the feasability of making the changes to your
servers. I understand that it is a bit of a hassle to do that to users,
and
to have to contact them one by one, but it has been successfully done
across
the globe with the other servers. I hope you understand why port
standardization is so important to us - in fact, one other reason we have
it
set up that was is we are looking at a rotate.aprs2.net type address for
certain applications. Having the ports standardized will allow roll-over
between the servers without worrying about the ports being different. The
standard is catching on - even servers who do not wish to become part of
the
network are using this port scheme. If you are unable or unwilling to
change ports, maybe we can talk about some other options. Please let me
know what you think!

Server names, following the Tier 2 format, would be APRSVK and APRSVK2,
and
the domain names could either be australia.aprs2.net, australia2.aprs2.net
or sydney.aprs2.net or any combination. We try to keep the domain names
regional in identity, so as to help users know where to find their
specialized feeds.

Enjoy! Let me know what you think.
