Steve Bragg KA9MVA has deved an APRS appliance which replicates all of the
D7 functionality and more.   You can download the schematic/pcb and code
to
build your own.     The major disadvantage is the current version requires
a KPC3 tnc.   You can easily replace the KPC3 with something else (your
PIC
16F84 for example), I have deved my own in an AVR which works flawlessly.

This may shorten your dev time considerably.
