If you want to lengthen the life of the SD card, it's easy enough to set up a pi with a read only filesystem, and I tend to use a class 4 card, but that was an issue with the pi1's.

Personally I've never had an SD card fail in a raspberry pi, even on my overclock pi1's that we notorious for failing.

vk5wtf

On Tue., 24 Jul. 2018, 10:58 Mark Jessop, <lenniethelemming@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks Glen.
I have had both good and bad experiences with Pi 2/3 units and as you say, a lot of it comes down to the SD card.

I've recently settled on the SanDisk Pro micro SD cards - my igate in Whyalla, SA is running one of these and has been up for a long time with no intervention from me.

73

Mark VK5QI

On Tue., 24 Jul. 2018, 10:44 Glen English VK1XX, <glenlist@pacificmedia.com.au> wrote:

Hi Mark

Well I have not touched the Direwolf system at Ginini since October last
year....

It has a battery backed supply (12V runs a 12>5V DCDC converter)

Tiny2 is a junk old modem and demod compared to direwolf. I reckon the
modem is at least 5dB better .

In the manual there is a SUBSTANTIAL writeup on how to get it going on
RPi. like a whol emanual dedicated to it.

I think Pi2 is a minimum.

We use a ODROID C1 because it has a eMMC card (self managing storage) so
the OS isn't running on some junk unknown SD card in RPi. But RPi is
OK.... cheap. does the job..... Ginini is 1.5 hours drive and only
accessable 9 months a year.
