yeah... She gets a tad chilly, plus you often need to be in a snow plow <BR>

We have finally been able to access the Mt Dandenong site and repair the<BR>
VK3RMD-1 digipeater.<BR>
<BR>
<BR>
<BR>
VK3RMD-1 provides good APRS coverage around most of Melbourne and parts of<BR>
Geelong.<BR>
<BR>
<BR>
<BR>
Thank you to the operators who have set there stations up as fill-in digis<BR>
while VK3RMD was off-air. Excluding VK3JPA-1 and VK3GY-1 you can now turn<BR>
your fill-in digipeaters off.<BR>

VK3JPA-1 and VK3GY-1 provide good fill-in coverage for areas that are not<BR>
covered by VK3RMD-1 or VK3RGI-1 and it would be great to see them continue<BR>
as fill-in digipeaters on a permanent basis.<BR>

<BR>
Any IGates that have been used to fill in the lack of out of area data /<BR>
messages must now be turned off or set to receive only and not produce<BR>
traffic other than their own beacon. If they are left running they will<BR>
flood the RF network reducing access for others. The official RX Only IGate<BR>
for Melbourne is VK3TBN<BR>

As you may already know VK3CV-1 (Mt Macedon) was struck by lightning a few<BR>
months ago. The strike damaged all equipment at the site as well as mains<BR>
power to the site. Mains power has recently been restored to the site and a<BR>
new digipeater is currently being built. It's hoped that VK3CV-1 will be<BR>
back in operation in the near future. You may have noticed VK3CV-2 & VK3CV-3<BR>
on the map. These systems are currently running under test at my QTH. They<BR>
are not at the digi site.<BR>

It is hard not to treat a well oiled APRS network like a commercial venture.<BR>
<BR>
It can turn into a horrible mess if not managed.<BR>
<BR>
Its a hobby but when it starts to need the rigors of a well planned system, it kinda takes the fun out of it ;-)<BR>

But I believe the hobby is a learning experience<BR>
<BR>
Heck I have applied heaps of knowledge I have learnt in ham radio.<BR>
<BR>
Thats the thing - you can't instruct people to do anything.<BR>
<BR>
They can do what they like - the only "police" are other hams and the power of numbers.<BR>
<BR>
I was always taught that the "air interface" is a valuable resource and should be managed.<BR>
<BR>
I spend my days chasing the ISS now, I don't bother about 145.175 MHz apart from car tracking<BR>
<BR>
I have some little trackers for airplanes and balloons I would like to fly.<BR>
<BR>
I think if APRS was not around maybe packet may have died ;-)<BR>
