I use HF APRS a lot for outback or long distance travel so family knows
where I am.
Have a look at the link below this was last year do some RF surveys in the
flood plain harvesting areas near Balranald for NSW DPI.

I might be out of the message sending business myself now Peter. I'm having
some problems with the latest release of Xastir.

Tracking balloons makes sense and tracking road traffic, and noticing 
the speed, is interesting to a point.

Anyway, it's a hobby that helps keep me sane.
