A vertical will definitely not be ideal for satellite reception:
- Your gain is in the wrong place (for the most part)
- Depending on spacecraft orientation (and the TLE's don't tell you this!),
you may have significant polarisation loss.
Do we have any information on if the satellite is transmitting linearly or
circularly polarised? (my guess is linear, like pretty much everything on
70cm up there)
With regards to receive systems, i've had *some* success with a 70cm
turnstile + MiniKits 70cm masthead preamp, on my 70cm SatNOGS ground
station.
I'm not 100% sure the pattern on the turnstile is a quite right, I think
it's a bit narrow. I also have various obstructions around the antenna
which produce nulls in interesting directions.
A plot from a recent-ish observation is here:
https://network.satnogs.org/observations/19338/
That strong interferer doesn't help the FSK9k6 demodulator much either...
I've got a few FalconSat passes queued up for the next few hours:
https://network.satnogs.org/observations/19670/
https://network.satnogs.org/observations/19671/
Data will show up on these pages after the observations have occurred in a
few hours.
At some point I'll see what I can get with my Kenwood TH-D72 and a yagi
antenna.
