Has anyone managed to send out a legitimate APRS signal in another
country?
If we use the Yaesu VX-8GR in ZL, the correct callsign would be
VK2XXX/ZL but it doesn't allow that many digits.

I've got a TinyTrak MT-AIO but it won't allow me to put any letters
after my callsign either.

Has anyone any ideas (other than get a ZL callsign for 2 weeks?)

I could be wrong, but as long as you include in your beacon you are
portable you can just use your own callsign.

Hi Liz,

I won't attempt to comment on the regs but as far as the RF AX.25 
protocol goes, the callsigns are limited to 6 characters plus the SSID 
from 0 to 15. I think it would be impossible to transmit a suffixed 
Australian callsign unless it was included separately inside the body of 
the APRS packet.

It will be an interesting issue if/when Foundation licensees get access 
to digital modes. Their callsigns simply won't fit!

I think the system would reject the call sign in the Fashion, I think the way around it would to put a "portable ZL"  in the beacon text?

If I remember the APRS spec correctly, the SSID (in the range 0..15), is coded as 4 bits of the transmission packet, not three bytes (e.g. “-“, “1” and “5”).

“Portable ZL” in the beacon comment is the way to go here.
