Pretty much all of the ISS passes while I am hiking are overnight, but a few between 5-6am (30 & 60 degrees) I might be awake for (attempting to wake up and pack up).

NO-84 has a few good late afternoon passes (60-80 degrees)

This page - http://aprs.org/psat.html - talks about PSAT running just 300mW, 16dB lower than the ISS so I suspect the problem would be hearing the satellite rather than it hearing you, assuming the its rx hasn't deliberately been desensitised. I rarely read about rx sensitivity on the satellites.

ISS is probably the only bird you'll have much luck with using just a
HT, but you might get into NO-84 on a good pass.

I'm about to go on a hike through Tassie (Overland Track) in a few
weeks, and I've been thinking about taking my VX8 with me and attempting
a few posits along the way, is there anyone in earshot of the ISS
SatGating around there? Any other aprs sats worth giving a go?
