err you are not done yet.

set your 706MK2 to like 25W carrier, observe VSWR while transmitting

get a jumper lead and observe how much VSWR change there is when you 
connect the PL259 on the back of the 706 to a chassis point. door jam 
etc. this will give you a handle on how well yoru antenna strap is 
working, and how much is on the feedline (which could cause RF feedback 
and crazy modulation if too high)
