Andrew,

I expect that the attack was automated, and, disappointingly, would not 
be un-common. ANYTHING with 'exposure' will get probed within a few 
minutes of going live. If you got 65,000 emails  you need to 
re-configure your logging settings to summarise, not send one for every 
event. Also, I'd guess from the WRT logs that your router may have been 
what looked like it was worth having a go at. To an attacker there's a 
big chance that something so configurable could have 'holes'.

I remember about 15 years ago (Dial up modem days) it took less than a 
minute for probes to start on a new Windows machine.
