Hi all,

Further to my note I was wondering why Josh was not hearing many packets... I checked my h/h and sure enough could see all of VK3 Being gated. Today in cleaning up the back yard, I found not only 3 bags of chewed items, but my sons new pup had chewed through the aprs co- ax.

Luckily the transceiver is still ok, now it should be working a lot better, Josh I hope you see more traffic now, let me know.

BTW I see the Geelong digi now.

Thanks for the focus and making me check things out

Kind Regards

Pete

Hi there, and assistance in running an igate is always welcome, please check with Richard Hoskin the vk3 administrator before doing so, as it can quickly overload the system.

I agree there is a lot more information that you can send, In fact I did that when I first started as an igate, and users complained on 2 meters, however the impact via digits must be considered, and then the mobile users have trouble competing with igates @ 50w with 2x 5/8 in phase antennas ;-), so you have to strike a balance, that was the lesson I learnt.

In fact that is why I used to run 70 cm igate locally around my area for my self and anyone else who cared to listen ( about 3 users a month max) I used to have all vk and Dix spots for vk running on it. It used to run hot, and was fine as I was the only digi/igate but I know if there was a second digi, I would have to cut the data down or the channel would never be clear for a mobile station.

Btw, We are still one digi down at the moment up at mt macedon, hence why there may be a few RF holes out your way.

I regards to Geelong, there is an igate / digi there, but it may have gone off the air, I will check.

Happy to help and discuss further, I have learnt from others, and happy to help you as well if you would like

Yours in radio

Peter

I'm in the process of gathering the gear together to set up an IGate at my QTH in Melbourne. I'm located in the outer south-western suburbs, and with the antenna I'm planning on building (stacked J Pole) I should be able to receive from Geelong to the CBD, and right up to Bacchus Marsh/Melton area. I don't have APRS TX capability in the car (yet - waiting on a GPS) but sitting at home at night at my QTH reveals MUCH more activity than the current IGates are reporting.

I do have some questions for the more knowledgeable however.

I'm not planning on setting up an APRS-IS -> RF gateway (I don't wish to put any additional traffic on to the network, the current digipeaters do a good job of extending coverage, so re-transmitting data that's already there seems pointless to me), however I do wish to announce the presence of the gate to the network. What is the legality of this station running unattended? Do I need to put in some sort of override switch to kill it if it gets stuck in tx?

I would not consider this a home station (This will be a dedicated computer, with a dedicated radio) so I presume I'll just use the -5 SSID?

Cheers,
Josh

Whether or not you appear on sites like aprs.fi is all dependent on if your packet makes it into the APRS-IS network, via an IGate.

If your packet's TTL runs out before it gets to an IGate, you won't appear on aprs.fi.

   Hi,

Does anyone on the list know why aprs positions aren’t making it
   from RF to googlemaps?
