In case anyone is interested, v0.16 of soundmodem supports the use of GPIO
lines on CM108 USB audio dongles to control PTT. It's not fully tested yet,
but it seems to work.
To use it you have to solder a wire onto one of the tiny pins on the USB audio
chip, then hook that up to the PTT transistor as normal.
It should also work with audio chips from 3S (SSS1621 and SSS1623), but you
need a patch for that (which I have).
What it means is that a single USB device, with a single connection to the
host, provides Tx audio, Rx audio and PTT. There is no need for a wire to a
serial or parallel port (or a USB serial or parallel adapter if you don't
have the port).
