Try putting NiCd batteries in the case and see if that makes a difference. The internal impedance of NiMH batteries is generally higher than NiCd and so you can't drag as much current out of them. If there is no difference then the reduced voltage (4.8V, since NiCd and NiMH are 1.2V per cell) would affect power output.
