Football on a rope, tied to a sprung switch
Toilet cistern ballcock and switch
Tennis ball in a vertical pipe
Ultrasonic distance gauge on a pole, pointing down
Waterwheel
Call your friend upstream
Hook into 'official' sensor network

These are just ideas.  I've never tried them.  I am not sure which ones I
would class as easy, or reliable.
