Amateur Radio NSW has taken steps this week to close down the packet
radio services at its Dural site. Affected are the digital repeater and
bulletin board services operating on the 40m, 2m and 70cm bands.

The system has provided a hub for packet activity in the Sydney region
and supports a base of 30 registered users. The service has operated for
20 years and been continuously maintained by Barry White, VK2AAB, who
should be congratulated for his efforts.

The reasons for the closure have not been announced.

In April 2010, ARNSW appointed a Digital Communications Coordinator
whose role involved overseeing the expansion of digital services at
Dural. In light of this appointment, the closure of the VK2WI system was
unexpected. Especially so in the centenary year of the organisation.

Users impacted by the closure have been requested to switch to an
alternate system, however, the valuable service provided by VK2WI cannot
be fully replaced.

Vale VK2WI BBS.
