Hi Daryl and all,
Nice to meet another aviator on the APRS forum.

I have built an RV6A and RV7A which I'm currently flying from Mittagong YMIG
Using a Tiny Track III and an FT817 for APRS when I'm in the air.
My journeys haven't been too far away as yet,but I hope to do a few trips
during winter time.

It's amazing the response we have had from our recent flights utilising
APRS.

I have had two Emails from people I did not know expressing concern because
Barry's APRS signal disappeared on the shores of Lake Eyre.

Barry flew in to visit me today (As if he didn't have enough flying the last
few days.) He dropped out at Lake Eyre as he descended to get a better
view.

Barry is using and old Hand Held/TinyTrak and I'm using a MicroTrak All In
One.

Cheers

The posits into 5REP on the leg up and back are in an almost straight
line. Interesting to know why?

Hmm, that is very interesting... almost too interesting to be a
coincidence.
It would be good to check out the terrain along that path.

Barry flies out of a small private strip between Sale and Traralgon in
Victoria.

He is flying a Jabiru 230 and he arrived back today. I heard his inbound
radio calls.

There are three of us using APRS in aircraft in Gippsland but Baz is
certainly the most prolific flyer. We are all flying Jabirus of various
models.
VK3BDG - Barry
VK3AHP - Chas
VK3AWA - Daryl

I flew to Narromine and return over Easter and was really surprised and
pleased with the coverage.

Well this guys been a busy pilot.. Ive been examining his paths and track
which is quite amazing.
Looks like he left from down near Sale and has been up to Lake Eyre North
(the south end) and has now turned around. Michael 5MW has just got a Igate
going at Roxby Downs in this last week, so talk about fortunate. We got
heaps of posits in through there.
Some really amazing posits and propagation on there as well at times. Looks
like hes on his way back now in the SA riverland.

>From what hes beaconing I think hes flying one of these Jabiru 2 seaters
http://www.jabirupacific.com/specs/j230.htm
He must love flying as it does not appear to fly fast or high. Must be a
real adventure this one.
His corner pegging works as you can see his navigational loops at times for
approaches etc.

The posits that got my attention are a few on the approach north of Renmark
where he was hitting VK3ECV-1 pretty consistantly before closing on the
Renmark/Berri system.
Also after Broken hill there where 4 posits just NW of Broken hill that went
through 5REP-1 at Cowell and down to Pt Lincoln about 550km total using 3
digs to get to an Igate. The first digi being about 400km away.
Another freaky posit north of Yunta today via 5REP at Cowell again then down
to Adelaide and into the Igate here.
I wonder if some of this is Ducting or comercial Aircraft enhancment from
above him as the posits come out of the blue for short periods and then
stop. These posits could be on the track for the Sydney to Perth comercial
routes.

A few similar posits around Yunta down to the Barossa 5BRC-1 before he hands
over to the Riverland 5RLD-1.
The tracking south of Broken hill into 2SRN almost joins up with 3ECV-1 well
north of Pooncarie .

Its pretty interesting stuff. I dont know if this link will work without you
being logged in to aprs.fi but try this and mess about with the zoom and
pan. Click on the position tracks and you will see the path and position
info for each posit.
http://aprs.fi/?call=VK3BDG-7&mt=m&z=6&timerange=259200
The map also shows the various digis involved in the trip at a glance.

I wonder where hes going tomorrow ?
PS if he wants to try this again we have some digis possibly going in at Mt
Arden near Pt Augusta/Quorn and also Near Pt Pirie which will fill up some
gaps on this flight path.. This is in the near future we hope.

Hi Daryl,

I'm Mark VK2MP (and a fellow aviation enthusiast). I saw an email about
your APRS easter flight and I told Connie KB0ZSG from Missouri on DSTAR
that I was talking to, about your APRS flight and the website aprs.fi. She
watched you as well as telling a friend of her's in Japan who was also
watching your progress. they both thought it was really cool that they
could watch you fly your aircraft real time.

Who needs a Sarwatch when you have the amateur population watching you!!??

Best regards,
Mark Plowman
VK2MP

While we're on the subject of airborne APRS... Yves VK2AUJ can often
be seen flying a Bell 47 (M*A*S*H-style heli) around Sydney, signing
as VK2AUJ-6.

His YL Connie VK2CON also flies (Pitts Specials) but they have yet to
work out a reliable mounting for the APRS unit, i.e. one that will
hold on in negative G's :-)
