Yes, back in the BBS/TNOS era.
The 9612 implements the BPQ KISS extension that allows encoding the  
port number in the high nibble of the control byte.  The Linux kernel  
didn't directly support this extension, but there was an  
'mkiss' (multidrop kiss) tool that could merge multiple psuedo TTYs  
into a single physical serial TNC connection.
