Soundmodem and Xastir is simple to install and set up on popular Linux
distro's as most of them have ready-made packages (i.e. an apt-get
install or yum install usually works).
If you want to build from source, soundmodem is easy, but Xastir has a
few prerequisite packages that must be installed before building.
Soundmodem has a nice setup program call soundmodemconfig that does all
the hard work of setting up the interface, etc. Xastir is pretty simple
to set up from that point using /dev/soundmodem0 as the TNC device. I
use the soundmodem/Xastir combination on everything from desktop PCs to
my little EeePC and it works well.
That's why I'm so annoyed that I can't decode any HF packets!
Happy to help (if I can) with Soundmodem/Xastir/VHF setup if you contact
me off list.
Anyone got this working on HF though?
Steve.
