Hi Dave,
I would ask Dinesh from Fox Delta about the new firmware look
on the site there are links under the details .. I have yet to go through
this my self .. Join the Fox delta LIST also
As to programming the PIC you will need a programmer to do the PIC there
are many easy build ones about or a commercial one for about 60 to 80
dollars ask around your radio club someone may have 1

Phillip,
I guess it is a bit about how you read it...
Anyhow, if I follow, I buy a '628 at DSE, but where do I get the firmware?
I'll assume I can program the '628 using ISP and my old 'PIC test bed'
(Silicon Chip 2001).

Hi Dave
Here is the section from the Fox delta site Its in Red in the " details "
section.
Since FoxTrak m ay be configured for various firmware, you may update
FoxTrak with a better & smarter Firmware & if necessary, change the PIC, to
16F628A. The Basic hardware remains the same.
The " Basic Kit " is shipped with 16F84A I believe this is prior to Smart
Beaconing hence the PIC upgrade, If you replace it with the
16F628A you can up date it to the Tiny track 3 + etc..
I am awaiting my 2 Kits and have just cleaned out our local DSE of 16F628A
PIC's

Phillip,
Hmmm, then the web page is a bit deceptive.. to quote
" The main new features compared to TinyTrak (Byonics) besides some hardware
variations is, speed dependable beacon rates and beacon transmissions at
major course changes."
If you need to change the PIC to do that, because TT1 config has no way to
control those features, then that's very misleading.
Also, none of the purchasing options describe the better PICs. I suppose I
go to Byonics.

Hi Dave,
If you have tried to program the PIC16F8A with a newer version
of TinyTrack you will need to replace the PIC16F628A as per the Foxtrack
instructions
Fox tracker is shipped with a PIC16F8A unless you have asked for a different
PIC
Tinytrac 1 PIC 16F84A - 20 P
Tinytrack II PIC 16CE625
Tnytrack 3 (+) PIC 16F628

Andrew (and all),
I've been on air overnight, but not seeing my callsign in the Google
list(http://vk4tec.no-ip.org/cgi-bin/google_vk2.cgi). It shows up on aprs.fi
(http://aprs.fi/?c=raw&call=vk2xpx*&limit=50 ).
Any idea what's happening?
For those that may be interested I'm using a Foxtrack and an old Alinco HH
with a 1/4 wave mag base on the shed roof for testing.
I've had trouble configuring the foxtrack, find that tinytrack config
version 1 is the only one that will work, but some features (like smart
beaconing) are not available with that version.
