Gday,

Here the recent APRS News for VK3 and beyond.

DIGIPEATER STATUS:-

Here is an update on the VK3 digipeater status.

VK3RLE-1;

TNC is being repaired.

VK3RON-1;

Transmitting ok but not receiving.

Requires site visit to fix.

VK3RLV-1

Transmitting ok but not receiving.

Requires site visit to fix.

The timeframe for restoring the faulty digipeaters is not known at this
stage.

All other Digipeaters, IGates, SatGates and Gates working well.

VK3 APRS PATH CHANGE:-

Remember to change your Mobile Tracker or Kenwood radio's due to the
implementation of the APRS 'New n-N Paradigm'.

Over time the old RELAY,WIDE and RELAY,WIDE2-2 paths will not longer work
in
Victoria.

They will be replaced with the path of WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 for mobiles and
[your
local digi],WIDE2-1 for home and fixed stations.

To implement the 'New n-N Paradigm' all you need to do is edit the APRS
path
in your tracker, Kenwood radio or home station and change it to;

- WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 for your mobile.

- [Your local Digi],Wide2-1 for your home station. ( Replace [Your local
Digi] with the closest digipeater to you )

In a few instances you may need to use the path of WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2 for
mobiles.

For the recommended path in your area visit
http://vk3.aprs.net.au/packet_path_guide.htm

The following VK3 area Digipeaters only support the 'New n-N Paradigm';
VK3RCV-1, VK3RON-1, VK3RLV-1, VK2RBX-1.

VK3ROW-1 and VK3RMD-1 will be upgraded to support only the 'New n-N
Paradigm' over the next few weeks.

IF you don't change your path you may no longer be able to access the VK3
area APRS RF Network.

WICEN & APRS:-

WICEN is getting ready for the annual Rally of Melbourne
<http://www.rallyofmelbourne.com.au/>  Event (10th & 11th of November)
which
is held in the Healesville area each year.

This year more use of APRS is expected. You may have noticed a number if
digipeaters with a W overlay on the icon on your map. These are the WICEN
digis that being setup on 145.200Mhz for the Rally. They will be used for
Rally scoring as well as APRS. During the Rally you should be able to
watch
the tracked vehicals from feeds on APRS-IS as the rally APRS data is being
fed into an IGate. WICEN may use ACMA approved operational call signs for
the event. Please do not use these digipeaters for general APRS traffic.

The second rally event to use APRS this year will be the Alpine Rally
<http://www.alpinerally.org.au/> held on the 24th and 25th of November.
This rally is held in the Bairnsdale area.

It will be using the APRS digipeaters VK3REB-1, VK3VHF-1 as well as 2
portable digipeaters. The event will operate on 145.175Mhz for scoring and
Rally APRS traffic. During this time all non-local APRS traffic will be
removed from the RF Network and local stations that are not involved in
the
event are requested to reframe from using APRS for the period of the
event.
This event will also be fed to APRS-IS.

International Space Station Digipeater:-

Over the past few weeks a number of operators have been having great
success
using the International Space Station Digipeater (ISS) to digipeat their
posits from space. This has been made possible in part by the Satellite
Gateway stations (SGates) that have been operational around Australia on
145.825Mhz. Thanks to VK3JTM, VK4TEC, VK8ZMA, VK6MJ and all the other
SGates
for providing these essential ground stations.

You can operate ARPS through the ISS by tuning to 145.825Mhz and use the
APRS Paths below:

UNPROTO APRS via ARISS,SGATE,WIDE2-1

If you run a Kenwood use the path setting of;

ARISS,SGATE,WIDE2-1

For UI-View the Unproto Address would be;

APRS,ARISS,SGATE,WIDE2-1

Web sites to check for your success are - http://www.ariss.net/ &
http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/pcsat.cgi

For information the current status of the ISS digipeater visit -
http://www.issfanclub.com/

Remember to set your Beacon Rate to 2 minutes and do not run in unattended
mode.

HF BEACON RATES:-

It is important when using HF APRS to set your Beacon Rates for Posits,
Status and Comments text to the correct rate to increase the effectiveness
of the HF APRS Network for all.

If you are using HF APRS please check and set your Beacon rates to those
set
out in the TinyTrack Version 3 HF Configuration area at
<http://www.aprs.net.au/tt_settings.htm>
http://www.aprs.net.au/tt_settings.htm

Cheers

Richard
