Agreed.  I already have the HH (an old ft-470 who's last battery finally 
bit the dust)  I just need to do some more research to see what old TNC's 
are suitable and I may splurge on a new GPS so all you see is the button 
on the dash and nothing obvious.

I am also going to modify the old cell phone glass on glass antenna to 2m 
so again keeping a low profile from a theft point of view.

Great idea though as I had not thought of those radios.  Cheap as chips 
and as you say receive as well.  They don't do DTMF, so I have been told, 
however it is not needed for this application.  Nice one!

The way to go ( on the cheap) is to get one of those $99 handhelds that
are being sold by several people in VK. 5W , has a RX can change
frequencies. Stick a TTx on the side, connect a old GPS and you are
away.
