[OZAPRS] APRS setup & TNC recommendations?

I've been "gunna" get into APRS for a few years now, and since I
recently decided to do a big sell up of my mobile phone junk, now is
as good a time as any.

So I've been digging around the net for cheap TNCs, and I found the
TNC-X, and considering how much a lot of TNCs are these days it
*looks* like a good deal for it's price. Good as in optional USB and
tracker add-on board.

Where I live (uni accommodation @Bendigo) I have found it hard to hear
VK3RCV, so APRS at home isn't high on my agenda right now, but what I
want to do is get a decent mobile setup going, and it's times like
these I wished I'd got myself a D700 instead of the FT8900 (swap,
anyone? :) ).

So for mobile, I want to set up a laptop (going to get myself an old
p2/p3 lappy) to a TNC then to one of my radios for mobile, and maybe
have another radio for voice alert and such.

These are the bits that I have so far that could be used with APRS:
FT-817, FT8900, TR-7400, MFJ-1270B (poor condition, corrosion on
board, picked up for cheap) & an OpenTracker (not yet assembled),
desktop pc running Linux, Garmin GPS-12 & a bluetooth GPS (pumps out
NMEA over bt serial, which win can do).

I'd also like to play with (people, hiking) tracking at some stage in
the future, so i'm looking into designing a 2m transmitter to go with
a tracker and cheap GPS.
