I am referring to the PIC... There is a lot more AX25 code for it... And
the CCS C Compiler is quite good. The compiler is about US$100... So it
is not expensive...

For which CPU? For the ATMEL AVR for example you can use GCC for the C
compiler (free) and there's several free options for programming. The
results from GCC seemed very good when I used it for a project last
year.
