I would suggest that people do a GOOGLE search on the following keywords

	Rockwell Jupiter GPS APRS

And you will find that this is the GPS used in the Earthmate that is
popular
in the USA... At least the Jupiter chipset is. The ROCKWELL talks its own
protocol. BUT, Byonics (www.byonics.com) has the GST-1 that converts from
ROCKWELL to NMEA... 

And since the GPS is only about $50 it is not bad value.
